Rating - both MileWiz and Simple have incredibly high ratings score. It would be fair to say that whichever one you choose, you will likely be satisfied.

Price is an important part of the decision, especially when it comes to a service that is supposed be saving money for their users. Such is the case with mileage trackers.

Simple costs US$5.49 per month or US$54.99 per year.

Onboarding

When you first install MileWiz, you will be asked to provide access to Location, Motion & Fitness and Notifications. Those are critical permissions for the app to function properly, as we’ve outlined here. Then you will be invited to Sign up or Sign in for a cloud account - this is to help preserve your data in the case of an accident (like your child deleting the app from your device). Using a cloud account with MileWiz is encouraged, but it’s not mandatory.

When you first install Simple, you will be asked to Sign in or create an account with them. Having an account is mandatory. You will then be taken through a similar process as with MileWiz.

Tracking and Precision

MileWiz was created and optimized for precision. For example, for MileWiz reliance on the Motion & Fitness sensor is of critical importance. For SherpaShare, on the other hand, precision is slightly less important. For example, if doesn’t detect trips shorter than 0.5 miles and it can give you a variance of up to 1 mile in detected start and end points when in dense urban areas or very rural areas. MileWiz on the other hand works well in both these environments, as well as in suburban areas.

Simple takes longer to detect the start of the trip which can cost you a bit on every trip. This accumulates over the course of one year and may be result in lots of missed savings.

Clearly, MileWiz provides the better value.

Places

Simple by SherpaShare does not provide the option to save places, name them and create rules for automatic categorization based on places. MileWiz has all of these features.

MileWiz allows users to enter any text they deem proper for purpose of a trip. According to tax authorities the purpose any trip should be specific as to provide clear reason for why the trip was necessary and why it was categorized as business. Simple by SherpaShare goes one step further - it allows users to predefine purposes for their trips and use them quickly as from a list.

Clearly, Simple provides more value here.

Mileage Rates

MileWiz offers completely customizable mileage rate system, where you can have different rates for different vehicle types as well as different rates up to certain mileage and after that. This could be important for users in some countries (outside of US and UK). SherpaShare allows only setting a flat mileage rate.

One thing that SherpaShare is really missing is the ability to categorize to alternative categories. Even though they show the rates for the moving, charity and medical categories in the US, there is no easy way to categorize trips with any of these categories through the app.

Additionally, as of September 2020, Simple still uses the mileage rates for 2019.

Working hours

MileWiz allows users to create a highly flexible schedule and enable automatic categorization based on working hours. SherpaShare does not offer such features. Without features for automatic categorization based on places and working hours, SherpaShare makes it impossible for the users to optimize the time they spend on categorizing their trips.
