Permissions to Operate

MileWiz was created with one single purpose - track/detect your trips automatically. With no need for you to remember to start and stop. To fulfill its purpose, it does need some help from you - give MileWiz the proper permissions to operate.

Location Permission

To detect trips automatically MileWiz does need access to your location at all times. When you grant permissions to MileWiz to Always track your location, you are allowing it to recognize that you have started moving, even when MileWiz is not On.

Having to remember to open MileWiz to allow it to begin tracking your location is not ideal, since you’d be prone to forgetting. So set the Location permission to Always.

How does that work?

When you first install MileWiz, it would ask you to grant the permission. At this point, you can choose between just 2 options - Allow While Using App and Allow Once. At this point select Allow While Using App. This would grant our app a provisional Always permission. At a later point, that is not determined by the app, the iOS will prompt you that MileWiz has been tracking your location on the background and will ask you if you’d like to Always allow or Change to Only While Using. Choose Always Allow.

If you’ve made a mistake and you selected the wrong option, at any point you can go to the Settings app on your iPhone. Then scroll down (a lot) until you reach MileWiz and tap on it. Right there you can choose Always for Location.

Motion & Fitness Permission

The Motion & Fitness permission is also critically important for the app to operate. MileWiz depends on the motion sensor to determine the kind of motion that your device is in. This allows MileWiz to only track your trips when you are in an automotive motion, but not when you are walking, running and cycling. Even you have granted MileWiz a permission to track your location, it still won’t record your trips if it doesn’t have access to Motion and Fitness.

How does that work?

When you first install MileWiz it will ask you to allow access to Motion & Fitness. This is a little bit simpler, so the options are Don’t Allow and OK. Select OK.

If you’ve made a mistake and selected the wrong option, you should go to the Settings app on your iPhone, scroll down (a lot) until you reach MileWiz and tap on it. Here you can set Motion & Fitness to ON.

It is possible that you don’t have Motion & Fitness option here. If that’s the case, go back to the Settings app main menu and select Privacy. Scroll down and close to the bottom you will find Motion & Fitness, tap on it. Make sure that Fitness tracking is enabled, then launch MileWiz again and it should ask you again for. this permission.

Notifications Permission

Notifications are not mandatory for the app to work - if you don’t enable them, the app would still track your trips. However, the easiest way to ensure everything is working correctly is through notifications. MileWiz doesn’t spam - it sends only notifications concerning trips that have completed and in case you don’t have any new trips for a week, since that’s a cause of concern that something may be not working properly

  • if you paused the tracking and forgot to re-enable it, or

  • revoked some permission by mistake, or

  • your subscription expired and it is not renewed

With your notifications enabled, you can expect that when you park your car on your driveway, by the time you reach the front door of your house, MileWiz will send you a notification that a trip is completed. If you don’t have that notification, it is possible that your trip was not recorded, and usually due to one of the reasons listed above.

We recommend that you keep the notifications enabled and use them as a reminder that the app is working and that you need to categorize the completed trips.

How does that work?

When you first install MileWiz it will ask you to send you notifications. Select OK. If you’ve made a mistake and selected the wrong option, you should go to the Settings app on your iPhone, scroll down (a lot) until you reach MileWiz and tap on it, then tap Notifications. First make sure that Allow Notifications is set to ON. Then you can choose which of the alert styles are good for you. We recommend that Notification is enabled, since this will allow you to go over all of the trips at the evening when you still remember what was the purpose of each trip.

Privacy concerns

Here at MileWiz, we take privacy very seriously. We understand that we work with sensitive data and that we should take great precautions and make sure that it stays private.

MileWiz does record your location, but only when you are driving. Your trips are being recorded only on your device. When a trip is completed, and if you signed up for a cloud account, your trip will be uploaded to the cloud but encrypted. Only you can decrypt that information since you’re the only one who knows the password of your cloud account. You will never see emails from us showing trips that you’ve taken, including addresses, distances or times. This information is private to you, we don’t have access to it, nor should we, and we can’t send you emails for something that we don’t know.

You can read more about this in our privacy policy.
