MileWiz vs Hurdlr
Side by side comparison
Let’s explore the similarities and differences between MileWiz and Hurdlr. If you are deciding between the two apps or if you are looking to make a switch, the information here may be important to you.
Before you install
Rating - both MileWiz and Hurdlr have incredibly high ratings score. It would be fair to say that whichever one you choose, you will likely be satisfied.
Price - price is an important part of the decision, especially when it comes to a service that is supposed be saving money for their users. Such is the case with mileage trackers.
MileWiz costs US$4.99 per month or US$49.99 per year (saving you nearly 17%, or 2 months are free).
Hurdlr costs US$7.99 per month or US$59.99 per year.
Onboarding
When you first install MileWiz, you will be asked to provide access to Location, Motion & Fitness and Notifications. Those are critical permissions for the app to function properly, as we’ve outlined here. Then you will be invited to Sign up or Sign in for a cloud account - this is to help preserve your data in the case of an accident (like your child deleting the app from your device). Using a cloud account with MileWiz is encouraged, but it’s not mandatory.
When you first install Hurdlr, you will be asked to Sign in or create an account with them. You will then be asked to provide access to Location and Notifications. Later you can also provide access to Motion and it’s recommended to improve accuracy of detected trips.
Other features
MileWiz is a single purpose software product - it is made to automatically track your mileage and all of its features are centered around making this task as efficient as possible. Hurdlr is not that - for the price of $8/mo it offers also a limited capability transactions tracking and a limited capability invoicing. To take advantage of its invoicing and tax features, it will cost you even more. You may be ok with these options, but you should know that in both categories there are better looking, more advanced and cheaper options.
Tracking and Precision
MileWiz was created and optimized for precision. For example, for MileWiz reliance on the Motion & Fitness sensor is of critical importance. For Hurdlr, on the other hand, precision is a lot less important. It detects only the start and end points and routes between them. Also it doesn’t detect pit stops. If on your way to a client, you need to make a stop for supplies, Hurdlr will not detect the entire route, but it will just log the trip as if you went directly to your client. In the course of 1 year, this may cost you hundreds of dollars in missed savings.
“So easy. Accurate. A must have for those who claim on their car. My work is related to delivering packages in downtown, where trips are usually short and there is a lot of driving inside parking structures. MileWiz is the only app out there that’s capable of handling it all.”
Routes - MileWiz renders the entire trips, while Hurdlr doesn’t show the trips on a map.
“What I like about this app vs others is the fact that this app shows the entire trip in the map as opposed to other apps that show you a small map of the beginning of the trip and a small app of the end destination of the trip making it difficult to remember what the trip was for....”
Clearly, MileWiz provides the better value.
Further Experience
Places
Hurdlr does not allow you to save locations and create rules for automatic categorization based on locations. In MileWiz, you can do these things and as you start tracking hundreds of trips monthly, you will appreciate this feature fondly.
Clearly, MileWiz provides more value here.
Vehicles
Both MileWiz and Hurdlr allow you to track trips performed with multiple vehicles and to easily switch between them. It offers the option to input the odometer readings at the beginning and end of the year. These are essential attributes of your audit compliant mileage log.
Purposes
MileWiz allows users to enter any text they deem proper for purpose of a trip. According to tax authorities the purpose any trip should be specific as to provide clear reason for why the trip was necessary and why it was categorized as business. Hurdlr doesn’t offer this option - in this regard, using Hurdlr as a self-employed could backfire in case of audit, because trip purposes are a required attribute. If you still prefer to use Hurdlr, use the notes field to input purpose-related information.
Mileage Rates
The mileage rates in Hurdlr are not customizable. That’s a solid minus for many people who get reimbursed by their employers at a rate different than the standard mileage rate set by the government. MileWiz, on the other hand, offers completely customizable mileage rate system, where you can have different rates for different vehicle types as well as different rates up to certain mileage and after that.
One thing that Hurdlr is really missing is the ability to categorize to alternative categories. For example, in the US people can claim deductions on their medical mileage as well as mileage driven for charity.
Clearly, MileWiz provides better value here.
Working hours
Both apps allow users to create a highly flexible schedule and enable automatic categorization based on working hours. Depending on what you need, Hurdlr may offer just that. MileWiz has more features in terms of customization - you can choose different categories on different days, handle night shifts or other less predictable situations.
Clearly, MileWiz provides better value here.
In Conclusion
MileWiz does offer some more thought out and polished features and at the same time has a lower price. Hurdlr is a software that provides limited capabilities in regards to multiple areas - mileage tracking, transactions tracking and income tracking. If these basic capabilities are sufficient for your use case, that may actually be a decent solution. However, in all of these areas there are better products and MileWiz is among the better ones in mileage tracking.
Ultimately, the best way to decide which one to use would be to install the apps and try them on. However, you can try MileWiz for free and you will need to start paying subscription to try Hurdlr.
