Automatic Categorizing with MileWiz

MileWiz 2020 - Car Mileage Log has one simple main purpose - to automate your mileage records. With MileWiz installed on your iPhone, and configured so that it has permissions to Always track your Location and read data from the Motion & Fitness sensor, it will automatically capture your trips 24/7. It doesn’t need any additional hardware and it certainly doesn’t need you to say when to start and when to stop recording.

Many of our customers will attest to the fact that this advanced algorithm allows them to track more miles than ever before. And there is one simple reason behind it - while you may forget to track and record trips, the app never forgets. MileWiz also tracks your full routes, so if you can’t take the shortest route between two locations, MileWiz knows that and attributes your mileage correctly.

But with that many trips detected, it can become increasingly overwhelming to keep your records properly categorized. This is why we have 2 wonderful ways of automatically categorizing your trips - using Working hours and using Places.

Working Hours

Categorizing based on working hours are a wonderful way to get a large number of trips out of the way. In this section we will cover how to use this feature and what are some of the most popular use cases.

How to categorize based on Working Hours

It is very simple and straightforwards.

Open MileWiz and go to Settings. Then select Working Hours and simply press the Add working hours button. You will be asked to select a category and times based on a weekly schedule.

Setting up your non-working hours

One of the best uses for working hours is actually setting up when you are not at work. If you want to keep your mileage records super tax compliant, that means inputing purpose of your trip and contact names of people who you meet for all trips that you categorize as business. Setting up your non-working hours will allow you to get the personal trips out of the way quickly, so you can focus only on your business trips.

Setting up your exact working hours

This would be most useful in the case when your business mileage is related to services like Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Postmates, GrubHub, Instacart, TaskRabbit and other similar services. In that case, all of your business mileage has one single purpose - driving to take customers and goods to their destination and driving between the locations of different customers. All of these constitutes business mileage that you can claim tax deductions for.

Places

Note that automatic categorizing by working supersedes all rules that you define in accordance to pre-entered places.

How to categorize based on Places

When you open MileWiz, one of the tabs is called Places. In this tab, you can create the locations that you visit frequently. You can choose whether you want to categorize at all, or you would want to automatically categorize when the place is your origin, destination or either.

Setting up your home

Driving between your home and permanent workplace are never considered tax deductible. If your home and office are separate locations, setup the location of your home and select to always categorize as Personal, then setup your office and do not setup automatic categorization.

If you work from home, or you simply don’t have a separate workplace, create a place with the location of your home and don’t set automatic categorization.

Setting up locations of your clients or people your work with frequently

If you frequently visit the same locations to meet with clients or vendors, consider setting them up as places in MileWiz. This way you can automatically categorize the trips as business. If you are working with a client on a specific project, for example realtor selling a house, you would want to input the location of the house, since you would be visiting it frequently. Once your work on the project is completed, you can simple delete the place to avoid clutter in your MileWiz app. If you have trips associated with a place that you delete they will remain categorized correctly.

Categorizing based on Places is a neat and efficient way of quickly getting trips out of the way. This way, you can focus on manually categorizing only the trips that are out of the ordinary.
